Child Custody & Visitation

Protect yourself and your loved ones.

Child custody, also known as conservatorship in Texas, is among the most emotionally charged aspect of divorces or other family law cases involving children. This is only natural, as each parent wants to play a role in the life and upbringing of their children. Resolving child custody and visitation disputes is often difficult; but is a crucial part of protecting the best interests of children and parents alike.

I am attorney Megan Rachel. For nearly 30 years, I have helped parents in the Frisco, Texas, area resolve disputes related to child custody and visitation. This experience allows me to address even the most emotionally charged conservatorship/custody matters.

Seeking the Best for Your Children

The state of Texas recognizes two types of custody arrangements, or conservatorships. These include:

  • Joint managing conservatorships: Most family law courts and judges prefer to name both parents as joint managing conservators. Such an arrangement, known as a joint managing conservatorship, gives each parent the right to be involved in key decisions regarding the child. In a joint managing conservatorship, the rights and responsibilities of each parent may vary based on an agreement between the spouses or a judge’s ruling.
  • Sole managing conservatorships: In cases involving a parent with a history of abuse, criminal activity, mental health issues, or drug or alcohol dependencies, a sole managing conservatorship may be awarded to the other parent. A parent who is named as a sole managing conservator has the exclusive right to make all important decisions relating to the child. The noncustodial parent, known as the possessory conservator, will still be granted visitation rights. If visitation cannot be agreed upon by the parents, it will be ordered by the judge.

Parents who are awarded joint managing or sole conservatorship of their children have many rights, including the right to be involved in decisions regarding the child’s education, medical care, and other issues pertaining to the child’s health and well-being.
